Components

Headtracker Transmitter. This is triangular in shape and each of the three corners has a speaker that emits ultrasonic signals. Size, 275 x 194 x 30 mm. 

3D Mouse Transmitter: About the same size as the Headtracker Transmitter but instead of thick straight sides, it has curved thin ergonomic design.

Headtracker Receiver. This is a smaller triangle than the transmitter and contains 3 miniature microphones that sense the ultrasonic signals. Size, 83 x 67 x 8 mm.

3D Mouse Reciever. These have five buttons and can either be free flying handheld (3D) or desktop (2D) devices. When the suspend button is pressed, the mouse can act as a microphone for audio input. The flying mouse uses ultrasonic sensors to sense its position in all 6-DoF.

Control box. Connected like a modem to the computer, transmitter and receiver. The tracker software calculates the position of the receiver based on triangulation from the relative times of the three ultrasonic signals.

Multiple systems. Up to four 3D mice and head trackers can be connected to act synchronously in a master/slave configuration.

Description of Operation

The Head Tracker consists of a transmitter, helmet-mountable receiver and control box and is typically mounted into head mounted displays or into eyewear for Virtual Reality and Simulation applications.  3D Mouse is a precise free flying handheld (3D) or desktop (2D) device typically used in object manipulation for CAD and Virtual Reality, but can also manipulate viewpoints. The 5 button 3D mouse is able to alternatively act as a microphone for audio input when the suspend button is pressed.

Both devices contain mounting holes to facilitate mounting in a wide variety of configurations. A control box is connected to both devices and determines the position of the receiver based on the timing of the microphone signals.  The transmitter contains 3 speakers which emit ultrasonic signals and the receiver contains 3 miniature microphones to sense these signals. The transmitter and receiver communicate along a line of sight, facing each other.   Up to 4 - 3D Mice and Headtrackers can be connected to act synchronously, in a master - slave hardware configuration and software can hook many 4 sensor pods together..  SEE SPECS BELOW.

Software
3D Mouse and Head Tracker are shipped with driver software and source code for PC and SGI platforms available for free downloaded at the link below.  In addition, many companies including VAR's have developed software or full application toolkits to make life easier for customers.
